Just Wow…

Man, I keep finding articles that are pissing me off this week. Here’s another one, which I’ll recap in the event you don’t want to read the article on CNN.com.

Basically, a 13-year old 8th grader was accused by one of her classmates that she had provided 400mg pills of IBPruofen to her. They called the 8th grader in to the principal’s office and asked her about it. She denied it and then they searched her backpack, without finding anything… Then they strip-searched her. Down to her underwear and bra… She’s 13, folks. 13. And they didn’t find anything.

If this was my daughter, I’d be suing the school too. That’s completely uncalled for. I would be so absolutely irate and pissed off that I would probably call the school administrators things even an inmate in prison wouldn’t dare say. That is completely uncalled-for. Just so wrong.

First of all, at the very least, parental permission should be required for something like that. Second, there was no real reason to suspect the girl had antyhing going on besides some random claim from one of her classmates. She had no track record of any wrongdoing. Basically, it was “Hey, someone accused her of having painkillers and she’s never done anything wrong… Let’s take all of her clothes off just to be sure.”

Proponents for what the school did are sure to point to safety concerns as to why things like this should be allowed, but that is a massively huge invasion of privacy of a 13-year old girl that for all intents and purposes, doesn’t have the ability to reject a strip search because she’s 13 and has to abide by school administrators or face suspension or expellation.

I hope these school administrators get canned, in the worst way. I absolutely cannot believe that a school would do something like this to a young girl. When I read things like this, I just imagine what my reaction would be if I had a daughter. If the principal recorded the conversation and gave it over to the media, I’d be ashamed of what I said, but I wouldn’t take it back.
